Louisa Harding - wow!

I finished that purple scarf for my Secret Santa recipient, and I love how it came out. I decided not to give it a half twist before joining it as it's made out of a worsted weight yarn and skinnier, so it's just a big rubber band, more or less...I like it this way. I tried it out and it's going to be very warm and snuggly. Now I just hope my recipient isn't allergic to wool!

I'm still plugging away on Entrelac, though I'm not feeling the burning need to do it that I once did. Sure, I'll finish it, but it's much more fun to dream up and start on other projects. I'm so bad. I need to finish some things before starting others.

Anyway, TK brought me to a keen yarn store that had a lot of wonderful things. I had to restrain myself, and even with doing so spent more than I really should have.

I discovered a wonderful book of accessories by Louisa Harding called A Gathering of Roses, and the yarns in her line are just beautiful. From the book I picked up I plan to make the lace scarf and the Flora hat out of the same Kimono Angora yarn (the color used in the scarf, #1 on the color card). I've never knitted lace before, so of course was motoring through the purple scarf so I could start playing with my new yarn!

The hat:

I wish I could get a closeup of the scarf, it is really pretty:

  • Hon, I am making an Entrelac scarf just now, and I can't figure out how to pick up stitches with live knitting on the needles. Is there a hint you can give me in writing, or should I just try the yarn shop??

    Thanks!!

  • I'll post this here and email to you too.

Picking up stitches is easy peasy once you get the hang of it. You should have what I call 'swags' of knitted bits hanging from your needle after finishing the first row of partial squares to make the end. What I mean by that is your knitting won't be all one straight line, you'll have individual little bits with spaces in between them that you'll fill in on the next 'row'.

When you go back the other way to make the next row of complete squares, pick up the stitches on each diagonal edge.

Personally, I found the pattern to look nicest when I only picked up the back loop of each stitch along the edge. This will make sense after you check out this tutorial on Knitty for the basics:

Good luck and let me know if you have more questions! If need be, I can take pictures of me doing it on my scarf as I'm still working on the danged thing.
